I thought I packed well for Paris – cute summer dresses, vintage sunnies, jeans short, my classic chic albeit practical wardrobe. But walking through Le Marais I realized that Parisians are on a completely different level. I found myself quite literally in awe of the fashion sense expressed by the locals. I noted how Parisian dress is not only fashionable, but there is a second thought behind each item of clothing. They don’t just wear shorts because of the warm weather; they don’t just wear sneakers because it allows them to walk quickly. Everything is calculated, but the magic behind all of it is that it appears effortless; everything appears effortlessly chic. Following my attentive observation and some late-night research, I am here to report on the new trends populating the Parisian streets.
Let’s start with what caught my eye as I first walked the Champs-Élysées: ballet flats. They are back and they’re being styled with everything. Not just dresses but also oversized trousers and denim shorts. I wouldn’t say that the return in popularity of ballet flats is a sign that this year there has been a surge in feminine clothing, as I have read elsewhere. Instead, I have noticed a move towards a pastel color palette in both men and women clothing. Think: muted green, buttery yellow, pistachio, sky-blue and dusty pink. Yes, I do realize they aren’t the stereotypical colors we tend to associate with menswear, but luckily times are changing, and color is slowly untying itself from gender.
Another phrase I feel encompasses Parisian style this summer is: simplicity is key. Parisians aren’t big on logos, but accessories are where they’re making noise. Giant flower pins, beaded earrings, and the re-emergence of anklets are all over the streets. I also spotted a lot of ribbon detailing, not just in hair, but on bags and even shoes. It’s about the details, it’s about appearing approachable but classy.
Finally, my last thought goes to the fact that micro bags are still a thing (mostly for aesthetics, let’s be honest). The real trend l’ve noticed is double bagging. Parisian women carry a sleek micro bag and tuck it inside (or wear it alongside) a giant straw tote. Even in this case, practicality meets style halfway, in a compromise that is classy to say the least.
Therefore, if I had to sum up Paris fashion this summer in one phrase it would be: offhand elegance. It’s not about trying too hard, but everything has thought behind it. Clothes move with the body. Accessories feel personal. The vibe is vintage-meets-modern but in a spontaneous manner. Nothing is forced but all is thought.
