Born in 1984 in the province of Lodi, Bianca Balti entered the fashion world in 2005 with an exclusive contract with Dolce & Gabbana that lasted ten years. In 2011 she became the first Italian model to walk for Victoria’s Secret. She has lent her face to houses such as Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Missoni, Armani and Guess, as well as being a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson. In 2017 she made her debut in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, winning the Rookie of the Year award.
But it is backstage, in that space between the catwalk and real life, that Bianca transcends the status of model and begins to enter more and more into the hearts of those who find a refuge in her. In a society obsessed with appearances, Bianca turned her own image into a platform for taking off the mask. She built a career on beauty and then used that visibility to show the other side as well, the uncomfortable one.
Over the course of her career she has given several interviews in which she spoke about the complicated relationship with her mother, the difficulty of being a mother herself, and a past marked by drugs. From that moment on she chose to share every step of her journey, starting from the moments of fear, the chemotherapy, the loss of her hair, determined to turn a deeply personal experience into a source of awareness. As she said more than once, if telling her story persuaded even one woman to get checked, it would have been worth it.
It is in this spirit that her appearance at the 2025 Sanremo Festival can best be understood. Walking down the Ariston staircase with a shaved head and the visible signs of treatment, she neither concealed her illness nor turned it into a plea for sympathy. Instead, she showed that a diagnosis does not diminish femininity.
Bianca simply continued to do her job with the same pride as always. And it was precisely there that she dismantled the rhetoric of the warrior at all costs. She has never asked to be seen as an indestructible heroine, and she has repeatedly pointed out that those who are unable to defeat illness are not, for that reason, any less strong. One can be vulnerable and powerful at the same time, as they are not opposites, but the same thing seen from two sides. After her ovarian cancer diagnosis, she also became the face of the “Ovaries. Talk About Them” campaign, created to fund an early diagnostic test, prompting many women to inform themselves and get checked.
Perhaps Bianca Balti’s true legacy is not having taught women to be strong. Strength still remains a goal, something to be achieved. Her greatest contribution has been to show that authenticity deserves a place in the public eye. That a woman can be fragile, frightened, angry, imperfect, without her womanhood ever being diminished. Illness is not what makes her a legend, it would be reductive to think so, and she herself has never told her story that way. It was simply the moment when the principle she has always followed, living without filters, became visible to everyone in the most definitive way. Bianca Balti has not redefined beauty. She has contributed to a much more radical idea: that a woman does not need to be perfect to be admired.
