Sometimes what remains of a gigantic act is a physical gesture, albeit a very small one. The first time I entered a ballot station was to elect the mayor of Rome. Though not an election of worldwide relevance, it had a profound personal significance. What I recall the most was the act of walking through the corridor and finally to the booth. Within it, I felt completely alone in the world. I needed nothing more and nothing less. Then, the moment I handed back my electoral card, the vote was cast. Indeed, the small, insignificant act of passing the card is one of the most powerful we are given. Voting goes far beyond this simple gesture, of course. There is research behind it: articles from newspapers, statistics, debates. Inevitably, and perhaps more than we would fathom, there is emotion: how we feel for one candidate or another, what we prioritize as human beings, our secret values. And finally there is representation: how voting is portrayed in art, the media, or even conversation. Elections are a uniquely human activity that encompass the entirety of our knowledge and disciplines. In the end, there may not be a right decision, but the decision itself is right. In an echo to Antonio Gramsci, a vote cast is indifference confronted.
This edition of Tra i Leoni is a celebration of elections around the world, and an attempt to observe this human phenomenon from different lenses. The institutional perspective is, always, key: Jeremy Bacigalupi writes about the Draghi report, that will most likely shape European policy in the coming years. However, the age of information technology forces us to consider alternative channels of communication. Francesca Manca explores the use of memes to shape political debate, and reminds us of how campaigning has radically changed. Chloe Bavaro talks about the role of art in the portrayal of political figures, and the creation of a true myth. In these pages, we pay a tribute to a year of intense political debate and electoral turnout, hopefully from an angle that might go unseen.
A volte ciò che resta di un atto monumentale è un gesto fisico, anche molto piccolo. La prima volta che sono entrato in una cabina elettorale è stata per eleggere il sindaco di Roma. Non era un’elezione di rilevanza mondiale, ma ha avuto un profondo significato personale. Quello che ricordo di più è stato camminare attraverso il corridoio e raggiungere la postazione. All’interno, mi sentivo completamente solo al mondo. Non mi serviva nulla di più e nulla di meno. Poi, una volta consegnata la tessera elettorale, il dado era tratto. Il gesto insignificante di passare la scheda va molto oltre questa semplice azione. C’è ricerca dietro: articoli di giornale, statistiche, dibattiti. Inevitabilmente, e forse più di quanto immaginiamo, c’è emozione: ciò che proviamo per un candidato o un altro, ciò che abbiamo come priorità come esseri umani, i nostri valori segreti. Infine, c’è la rappresentazione: come il voto è mostrato nell’arte, i media, la conversazione. Le elezioni sono un’attività esclusivamente umana che incorpora la totalità della conoscenza. Alla fine, non c’è una decisione giusta, ma è la decisione stessa a essere giusta. Con eco gramsciano, un voto è un affronto all’indifferenza.
Questa edizione di Tra i Leoni celebra le elezioni in giro per il mondo, e tenta di osservare questo fenomeno umano da tanti punti di vista.
